YOUTH CENTRE OF AVDIMOU
All of Avdimou's inhabitants are refugees.
They came to Avdimou for temporary settlement, coming from
45 different communities out of the territories of Cyprus
that are occupied by the Turkish army. The young people of
that era decided to create a Centre so as to spend their free
time creatively. So -under unfavourable conditions -the Youth
Centre of Avdimou was established on the 10/10/1976.
The first committee, which was elected
on the 15th of March 1977, consisted of the following:
| President |
Polys Kyprianou |
| Vice-President |
Georgios Kkeses |
| Secretary |
Andreas Hadjikyriakou |
| Treasurer |

The Youth Centre of Avdimou was one of the
founding members of AOKNEL. The Youth Centre, during its long-lasting
offer, had a note-worthy soccer team that participated in
the AOKNEL league from 1977 until 2000. Today, unfortunately,
the soccer team does not exist.
The Centre has a remarkable dancing group for children aged
9-15 under the management of Christina Giorgalli. It also
has a team for table soccer-pool/billiard as well as a team
for Mini football.
Ever since the time it was established,
the Youth Centre came -in an advisory manner -under the Welfare
Bureau and today it comes under the Youth Board along with
all the political/party and other youth organisations.
The Youth Centre significantly contributes
to the various activities that take place in the community.
Among the many activities are the Christmas celebration, the
Carnival ball, the Easter celebrations and contests, Beach
Volley at the community's seashore, the Hunting Expedition
and target shooting, exchange of visits with other Youth Centres,
Lectures and Blood Donations.
Today's committee of the Youth Centre,
which was elected on the 10/12/2002, is:

COMMUNITY WELFARE BOARD OF
AVDIMOU
Vathylaka 4, 4600 Avdimou Tel. 25222737
The Community Welfare Board of Avdimou
was established in 1976 and functions as a Regional Day Centre
since 1998.
In the context of its efforts for improvement
of the elder persons' standard of living, it offers two programs
in the villages of Avdimou, Prastio Avdimou, Agios
Thomas, Platanistia, and Anogyra. These programs
occupy one Social Worker, four caretakers, and an administrator.
The programs are:
| 1. |
In-house care program.
Provides in-house care to individuals who have difficulty
in servicing themselves (e.g. cleaning the place, cooking,
washing of clothes, shopping for food, escort to the doctor's,
bathing, etc.). At the time the program services 25 houses
of elderly persons. |
| 2. |
Food program. Breakfast and lunch is
offered to elderly persons of the program. The food is
prepared by the caretakers of the Centre, Monday to Saturday.
A home delivery is offered to the persons who cannot visit
the Centre. |
A Mini Bus was bought in order to better
serve the elderly. Also, the Centre for the Elderly provides
to the elderly the opportunity of participating in various
excursions, observing artistic performances, participating
in celebrations, and spending their free time creatively and
in an entertaining manner.
The goal of the Centre for the Elderly is
to cover the needs of as mane elderly as possible within the
boundaries of Avdimou and the Region.
The Community Welfare Board of Avdimou offers
a complete cycle of programs for the family and the child
since 19/9/2002, operating the Multi-purpose Centre for the
Child's Protection and Occupation, in which the following
operate:
1. Nursery for infantile children.
2. Children's Station / Kindergarten
3. Children's Club
4. Summer Pastime / Occupation
In the context of its operation, educational
and entertainment excursions take place, as well as attendance
of theatrical performances, puppet shows, etc. Occasionally
lectures and seminars by specialised psychologists and paediatricians
take place.
Children of up to 2 years old are accepted
in the Infantile Department.
The older children of the department receive an education
adjusted to their age.
The child of that age -beyond the care, affection, and protection
that is provided to him/her -operates in the context of free
movement, in the teaching of songs, fairy-tales, and puppet
shows. These children create easy handicrafts, paint, make
"collage" items, etc.
In the Children's Station the infants -parallel
to everyday discussion, elaboration on some issue -observe
the teaching of songs, fairy-tales, rhythmic gymnastics, puppet
shows, exercises on fine movement, training on concepts, sensory
exercises, handicraft making, and other activities adjusted
to their ages.
In that way the children are given the opportunity
to cultivate their social emotions, they serve themselves,
learn to express themselves correctly and on time. They get
accustomed to solidarity and benefit through a disciplined
freedom.
Children aged 6-12 are admitted in the Children's
Club. Here the children can have a healthy pastime,
they are aided in the completion of their homework, they are
entertained, they develop friendly relationships, play, spend
their time with creative activities, go to excursions, etc.
A similar program will run in the children's
summer pastime / occupation.
